My Christianity & Black Lives Matter

I recently heard a few Christian people in my circle denounce the Black Lives Matter campaign. Their reasoning was that Black Lives Matter stands for abortion and other practices that are contrary to their religious believes. Though this didn't matter to me, I proceeded to look up the other beliefs of Black Lives Matter. Honestly, the fact that an organization exists to fight for equality for a people that continue to suffer at the hands of a corrupt system is enough to support it. It is clear that people are suffering in our nation, and in the nations of the earth because of their race. I just wanted to know for myself what they stood for aside from racial equality. As I examined their beliefs, I found that while they fight for equality for blacks, they also fight for equality for the marginalized within the black community (women and homosexuals). According to the Black Lives Matter website, the Black Lives Matter campaign is "...guided by the fact that all black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location." BLM states that even within a marginalized community, there are those who are even more marginalized; and they (BLM) fight for the basic human rights of those also.

Therefore, I take this stance, as a Christian who has my own established belief about sexuality that is heavily rooted in my Christian upbringing: I stand with Black Lives Matter without compromising my commitment to Jesus. While I don't agree with the practices of homosexuality, every life God placed on this earth matters. Regardless of your sexual orientation, your life matters. I will not back down from supporting an organization fighting for basic human right for all because of my religion. In fact, I will support because of my religion! If you're a christian, I know you know about the woman caught in "thee act" of adultery. LOL.  Again, her sin caused her to be marginalized by society and Jesus stepped in. He compromised his reputation to stand with her.  Jesus was a whole rabbi!  He was on the up and up. But he stood with that woman.  Her sin was a sin! But she had no right to be treated unfairly and violated by her community. Jesus defended that right, then He addressed her behavior: Go and sin no more! (John 8:11).  We also can stand up for the basic human rights of all people (regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc.), and still maintain our religious reservations.

Similarly, while I view homosexuality as a sin, and absolutely have the right to do so, I don't believe someone should be treated differently by another human being. They should still be loved, and treated fairly within society. I will not facilitate the legacy that uses religion as a way to oppress, ignore, or cause division among people on an issue that is basic and necessary to the human experience. Putting your religion before the basic human rights of others ultimately separates us as a human race, perpetuating the practices of injustice, and weakness the "equality for all" movement. So please, just stop it. STOP USING YOUR RELIGION AS AN EXCUSE TO DO NOTHING! Because while you're using your voice and religion to denounce the cause, you're virtually silent about the actual issue. And we all know silence is compliancy, whether you are willing to accept your own level of compliancy or not.
